Khmer - Section B: Dependent Vowels · Day 19A: Review Part 1

Hello! Today is primarily a review lesson, but we will also learn how to type spaces. Khmer does not put spaces between words, but they have a similar function to what commas (,) do in English. In addition, they are sometimes used to set off numbers and proper names, and always after the period symbol “។”. In English, typing a space is simple, right? Just press the space bar. When using the Khmer keyboard, there’s an extra step: press and hold the “Shift” key, then press the space bar: “Shift” -> “Space”. That’s easy enough, right? Awesome! Like we said, today is primarily a review lesson. Along with all 33 consonants and subconsonants of the Khmer alphabet, we will review the first 5 dependent vowels: ា ិ ឹ ី ឺ. Remember that the letter ba (ប) has some special behavior: when you add “ា” to “ប”, it turns into “បា”. Check the message on the top of your home screen (the "lessons" page) if you have general questions or need help. Have a great lesson!

Typing test rules

If you do NOT fix the errors, a penalty will be added to your final WPM score. To fix the errors, press the backspace key.

Error colors

The acceleration and deceleration lets you see where you speed up and slow down during the typing test.

Bad case is when the case is incorrect. You typed '. the' instead of '. The'.

Bad ordering is when you typed a letter too early. For example, you typed huose instead of house. The U came too early.

Doublet is when you typed a character twice. For example homee or commmunity.

Other mistakes are not categorized.

Red is if you decide to not fix a mistake. A penalty will be applied to your score.

WPM calculation

WPM means Words Per Minute. It is a measure of the output speed on a keyboard. Here's how it works:

  • start a timer and start typing for exactly 1 minute
  • count how many characters you just typed including spaces and punctuation
  • divide that value by 5 (the WPM system considers a word is 5 keystrokes)
  • the result is your Words Per Minute speed
If you happen to have a penalty it means that you did not fix errors during the typing test. Not fixing the errors (when the text turns red) will lower your WPM by the amount next to the speed. The penalty is proportional to the length of the text that was not fixed.
