Khmer - Section A: Consonants · Day 4B: Learn Subconsonants

Hello! In this lesson, we'll learn the sub-consonants for the 8 consonants we already know. Each consonant has a sub-consonant, which is a smaller version, written underneath another consonant. They are similar to the lowercase letters in English, though their function is quite different. To type a sub-consonant, first type the main consonant, then press the “J” key (this indicates the next letter is a subconsonant), then type the sub-consonant. Here are the consonants, with the sub-consonant form displayed after the main consonant: [ក ្ក Ga: This letter uses the "K" key.] [ខ ្ខ Ka: This letter uses the "X" key.] [គ ្គ Go: This letter uses the "Shift" -> "K" key.] [ឃ ្ឃ Ko: This letter uses the "Shift" -> "X" key.] [ច ្ច Ja: This letter uses the "C" key.] [ឆ ្ឆ Cha: This letter uses the "Q" key.] [ជ ្ជ Jo: This letter uses the "Shift" > "C" key.] [ឈ ្ឈ Cho: This letter uses the "Shift" > "Q" key.] Check the message on the top of your home screen (the "lessons" page) if you have questions or need help. Have a great lesson!

Typing test rules

If you do NOT fix the errors, a penalty will be added to your final WPM score. To fix the errors, press the backspace key.

Error colors

The acceleration and deceleration lets you see where you speed up and slow down during the typing test.

Bad case is when the case is incorrect. You typed '. the' instead of '. The'.

Bad ordering is when you typed a letter too early. For example, you typed huose instead of house. The U came too early.

Doublet is when you typed a character twice. For example homee or commmunity.

Other mistakes are not categorized.

Red is if you decide to not fix a mistake. A penalty will be applied to your score.

WPM calculation

WPM means Words Per Minute. It is a measure of the output speed on a keyboard. Here's how it works:

  • start a timer and start typing for exactly 1 minute
  • count how many characters you just typed including spaces and punctuation
  • divide that value by 5 (the WPM system considers a word is 5 keystrokes)
  • the result is your Words Per Minute speed
If you happen to have a penalty it means that you did not fix errors during the typing test. Not fixing the errors (when the text turns red) will lower your WPM by the amount next to the speed. The penalty is proportional to the length of the text that was not fixed.
